ZIP32S ARCHIVE MANAGER

SUMMARY

ZIP32S is a freeware 16/32-bit ZIP manager for Windows. It was originally intended as an open-source project; unfortunately, the source has been lost, and the program was last worked on in June 2001.

It was written in Delphi 2 as a "hybrid" program for 16-bit Windows with the Win32s libraries installed, and designed to take advantage of the 32-bit InfoZIP libraries and DelphiZIP components.

Its only claim to fame is that it features in several of the Calmira screenshots on this site...

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Minimum:

* Windows 3.1 with Win32s version 1.3 (the newest version) installed, or any 32-bit version of Windows.
* 386 processor
* 4 Mb RAM
* VGA display

Recommended:

* 486 processor
* 8 Mb RAM
* 16-bit colour SVGA display.

Tested under:

Win 3.1/Win32s, Win 95, 98, ME, 2000. Not tested under NT4 or XP.

INSTALLATION/UNINSTALLATION

Simply unzip the files in the archive to a folder and run ZIP32s. To uninstall, delete the same files.

NB: Don't copy or move the DLLs to your system folder, especially under 32-bit Windows. If you're running any other 32-bit freeware or shareware archive managers, it's quite likely that they're using newer versions of these DLLs which shouldn't be replaced. ZIP32s intentionally uses older versions of the DLLs to maintain 16-bit compatibility.

USAGE

* Common ZIP operations: create archive; open archive; save archive; add to archive; extract from archive; delete from archive; delete entire archive.
* Additional operations: Open/view files from within archive; optionally extract archive and run a SETUP or INSTALL program if one is detected; open archives by drag/drop onto program's main window (tested with File Manager, Calmira and Win32 Explorer); associate with ZIP files if required; extract SFX files.

LIMITATIONS

1) Features not implemented due to loss of source during development.

* There are no program options, and no settings are saved.
* ZIP32s always offers to clear its temporary folder on closing if any files are present; this was intended to be optional. This procedure doesn't delete subfolders in the ZIP32s temp folder if they exist.

2) Unsolved limitations:

* Slow starting up under Win3x (no speed problems under Win32).
* ZIP32s doesn't like opening non-SFX EXEs; it recognises them as non-SFX, but takes a long time (sometimes around 2 minutes under Win3x) doing so. It doesn't hang Windows, but feels as though it has. This problem is present, but to a lesser degree, under Win9x.
* Can't rename LFNs or filenames with spaces to 8:3 format. Extracting these type of files under Win3x is therefore not recommended.
